Peale’s Terrace Garden

Peale refers to this as his oasis. Here, among the rich fragrance of his flowers, away from the sounds and smells of Manhattan, is where he comes to relax. His hobby is to scan the city with his telescope -- godlike from his Olympus -- and to, in an anonymous way, occasionally exert some influence on the lives of the puny people below. He is interested in the lives of others without wanting to be a part of them. He enjoys the detached feeling of being above it all.
