Burrowing animals from a distant era created tunnels and subterranean nests to hide from the predators of their time.  Their tunnels were reinforced with especially rigid and enduring natural cement that have made the passages last through many centuries of geologic upheaval.  Several millennia later, under the pressure of the steep flowing rivers these ancient hollows now create powerful sprays.
